Targeted for current teachers in a K-8 classroom, a key feature is the continuous coaching of instructional practices using video technology that captures both teacher and student work. All coursework is directly tied to the real work you do in your classroom.
The elementary content courses that complement the clinical courses—in math, science, writing, literacy, social studies, technology, and linguistics—provide deeper subject matter knowledge and understanding.Three highly interactive practices are emphasized: assessment, culture and climate of the classroom, and teaching for learning progressions.
This first course in Effective Teaching introduces three research-based competencies around which the program is built – Assessment, Sustaining a Culture of Learning, and Teaching for Learning Progressions. Candidates look for fresh perspectives on their own teaching by studying each competency through unexpected channels, including online games, virtual field studies, and video documentation and analysis. Candidates then explore their own teaching practice related to the competencies and analyze video clips captured in their classrooms with both peers and instructor using the Effective Teaching Rubric©, which is employed throughout the program and is a capstone assessment at the end of the program.
