Intensive instruction and professional facilities provide undergraduate animation students the interactive production skills needed to become compelling visual storytellers.
The Animation and Motion Media program strives to graduate professional animators who create powerful and innovative films. Our faculty have deep roots in the industry and works with you to develop strong, distinctive animation styles and ideas. We emphasize storytelling, collaboration and professional practice. Our goal is to cultivate work that engages viewers. Beyond making an audience laugh or cry, we encourage you to create stories with a big vision and to strive for a global impact.
You can specialize in traditional narrative character
animation, motion media art, or interactive animation. These specializations translate to real-life industry projects: animated cartoons, stop-motion, digital video experiments, motion
graphics, advertising spots, special effects, storyboarding, gaming art
Animation is grounded in drawing – you learn to draw from your personal life and imagination in this program. Drawing is fundamental, a tool for seeing the world, and understanding light and space. Building on this, we offer a variety of digital, traditional and experimental tools for telling animated stories. Through our integration with the larger University, you are immersed in the history of animation, screenwriting, and the fine arts. We pull from all these diverse sources when creating films.
While working to create distinctive animations, you learn a number of professional skills including: critical thinking, adaptability, inventiveness, time management and resiliency. Our required internships expose you to professional studios and practices. At the end of your study, you graduate with a professional reel and a marketing package that propels you into the industry. Our alumni have been hired by major companies including: Nickelodeon, HBO, CloudKid, Blue Sky, Rock Star, Film Roman, among others.
Our curriculum offers instruction in a diverse variety of physical and digital tools. These 2D and 3D tools range from armatured puppets to CGI characters. You will be well-versed in all forms of visual storytelling, from abstract art to interactive games.
The program's facilities emulate the environment of a major modern studio, including a state-of-the-art digital lab and a multi-station
down-shoot space, with complete access to digital video, sound, and photographic studio equipment
Alternative Currents is an inter-disciplinary course that invites students to engage with films and videos made by directors and artists working outside and in opposition to the established norms or conditions of mainstream film.
Success in the animation field depends upon a solid, fundamental knowledge of business standards and practices in order to build a career. This course addresses such issues as strategies in seeking employment, copyright, taxes, contracts, and the studio workplace.
