The Creative Writing minor allows you to not only pursue your interest in one genre or multiple genres, but also work with nationally-renowned faculty. It is an avenue for you to hone your writing talents, and infuse your studies with a dose of creativity.
A versatile program of study that compliments a variety of majors, the creative writing minor is an excellent opportunity for you to strengthen your work as a writer. This 12-credit program offers you the chance to work closely with faculty in managing your creative ambitions, developing strategies for composition and revision while analyzing the craft of literary masters.
The global perspective of the Creative Writing program, supported by Literature course offerings, allows you to expand your creative worldview by studying works ranging from Shakespearean plays, to medieval literature, Romanticism and American avant-garde. Courses are also offered analyzing major thematic elements, such as the concept of Utopia, and the role of women and family in literature.

By studying the elements that underlie children’s and teen literature, students will gain a fuller understanding of what it means to write for these age groups. Students will prepare a manuscript, consisting of either two picture books, two short stories or an excerpt from a middle grade or young adult novel.
Students explore the wealth and depth of their unique experience in order to craft works that extend, deepen, question and meditate on the authors’ real and crafted autobiographical identity.
