Across school districts, educators are more aware than ever of the diversity of their student population. By taking this program, you will be prepared to meet the varied needs
of all students in grades K-8 by combining hands-on experience with the most
current technologies and proven, research-based strategies. Gain a stronger sense of how to support students’ language and literacy development by building on the strengths of each student, how to differentiate curriculum and instruction so that students are appropriately supported and challenged, and how to analyze and consider your own practice in a reflective manner. Lesley University's literacy instructors discuss areas of the language arts and how they can be achieved in the Literacy for K-8 Classroom Teachers Master's degree program.
This class is designed to support the classroom teacher in understanding the purposes of assessment including screening, progress monitoring, and diagnostic tools. Students will be introduced to assessment tools in the key areas of word identification, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, phonemic awareness, emergent literacy and selected topics in writing. Application to students from elementary through middle school will be made. Using tools with students with diverse linguistic needs and special educational needs will be incorporated throughout the content of the class. This course is designed to align to the International Reading Association’s standards for Assessment and Evaluation for Classroom Teacher Candidates and is recommended for licensed teachers.
