Independent Living Skills & Community Exploration
Students take weekly classes and workshops about independent-living skills. By traveling and field trips, students have plenty of opportunity to explore neighborhoods. Topics include:
- Money management
- Nutrition and meal planning
- Food preparation
- Organization skills
- Health and safety
- Service learning
Job-Skills Development
Students improve their job skills with support from a Vocational Advisor from Threshold's Career Services. Students:
- Are placed in a nine-month work experience specific to their individual needs
- Take a weekly workshop on campus
- Meet with on-site supervisors for advice
Current Issues in Adult Life
This seminar-style course teaches students to understand, interpret, and analyze issues that are worldwide or national. Many of the issues are about human rights and/or politics. They involve people from different cultures and genders. Students:
- Subscribe to a newspaper of her or his choice
- Use a variety of other news sources for information
- Are required to read articles and books on current topics
At the end of each semester, students complete a research project.
Finance
Students begin preparing a realistic budget to live in an apartment. They work on finances and learn how to pay bills each month.
Cooking
Students improve their skills related to cooking, shopping, and meal planning. They also learn to help their community by preparing a meal for a shelter or other community agency.
Additional Coursework - Electives
Bridge students participate in a weekly creative-arts elective at Threshold. Physical education is offered as a separate elective.
