Sponsored by The Art Institute of Boston (AIB) at Lesley University and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Art Talks lectures will be held daily, June 24-27, 2013, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Kenmore Classroom Bldg. at Boston University, Room 101, 565 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston.
Art Talks is part of AIB’s twice-annual intensive residency for students in the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts program, when visiting artists, critics, curators and art historians from throughout the art world are welcomed to campus.
The MFA in Visual Arts Program is directed by renowned artist and 2011 Guggenheim fellow Judith Barry, whose work crosses a number of disciplines including performance, installation, sculpture, architecture, photography and new media.
The MFA in Visual Arts, a full-time, low-residency program offered by The Art Institute of Boston (AIB) at Lesley University provides the ideal solution for artists, teachers, and professionals in related fields who are seeking professional advancement in the field of visual arts. The MFA program allows students, with the guidance of our internationally known faculty and mentors, to design their own studio and academic plan each semester as they broaden their knowledge of contemporary art, art history, and critical theory over four semesters, two years of concentrated study.

Gregg Bordowitz is an artist and writer. For the past three years, Bordowitz turned his attention to performance. Bordowitz teaches in the Film, Video, New Media, and Animation Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and he is on the faculty of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.
“I believe that art can change the world,” says Bordowitz. “I believe that art and freedom are necessarily related. There are no facts to support these claims. Still, I carry these beliefs formed decades ago. How do some beliefs remain and what do I gain by believing? At risk of sounding ridiculous, I will try to explain.”
Angela Dufresne’s exhibitions include The Hammer Museum, LA, (solo) as well as in The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, P.S. 1/MoMA, Rose Art Museum, CRG and Monya Rowe Gallery in New York and Sarah Lawrence College. In 2010 she curated a group exhibition “F**kHeads: Portraiture for the Silicone Enlightenment” for Kinkead Contemporary, LA. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
“My work engages in the stuff of the world, in dialogue with media, film, individuals and history,” said Dufresne. “I don’t appropriate cultural production, I ‘cover’ it, like Tina Turner covers the Beatles ‘Come Together’. My work is a performance, a reenactment, a death ray meant to destroy the space between myself and what is being represented.”
Over the course of his 30-year career, Ken Lum has developed a large and complex body of work that focuses on the complexity of identity formation in both public and private realms. Lum has investigated subjectivity within the parameters of the sign-form itself. A primary theme of his work is the articulation of individuality within the constraints of social, political, and economic encodement. Born in 1956 in Vancouver, Canada, Lum has been exhibiting his work since the late 1970s. He has worked through a variety of media including public performances, sculptures, photographs, paintings, and installations. He was recently appointed Director of the Undergraduate Fine Arts program of the University of Pennsylvania.
Valeska Soares is a multidisciplinary artist. Her work often explores the complex relationship between how we perceive, experience, and record time, and how this plays out in our collective/individual memory.Valeska Soares was born in Brazil and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. Her work is included in the collections of The Tate Modern, London, The Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., The Solomon Guggenheim Museum, New York, Inhotim Centro de Arte Contemporânea, Inhotim, Brazil, and CAC, Centro De Arte Contemporánea, Malaga, Spain, among many others.
