Dr. Vierling-Claassen has a PhD in Mathematics from Boston University, where she studied Algebraic Geometry. Her mission is to help adults, students, and teachers to develop their mathematical voices and power. In her research, she is currently developing a theory of the way shame disrupts mathematics learning and impacts mathematical identity. In the classroom, she examines the role of relationships and narratives in teaching and learning. She works to understand mathematics as a human endeavor, necessarily connected to all of our other work as humans. She has been invited to give lectures about relationships between mathematics and art, published articles that use mathematics as a lens for understanding human relationships, spoken about research on social networks, and spoken an corresponded widely about shame and identity in mathematics education.
