Dr. Cattaneo is a founding member of the Expressive Therapies Division at the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences. She has taught a variety of courses in art therapy, expressive therapies, clinical application and supervision, as well as courses examining power, privilege and oppression in clinical practice, and standards and ethics in expressive therapies and mental health counseling. Throughout the years at Lesley University she has served as Acting Division Director, Coordinator of the Art Therapy Specialization and Director of Field Training.
Her approach to expressive therapies is based on the understanding of the power the arts have in clinical practice and community as a transformative experience that can foster meaningful insight and growth. The multicultural perspective that incorporates the cultural dynamic and experience of the individual client and groups frames her teaching.
Dr. Cattaneo’s continued research interests are clinical supervision and the application of the arts in supervision, standards and ethics in clinical practice, multicultural clinical competencies in the expressive therapies and mental health counseling and the arts.
For her contribution to the development of art therapy education, Dr. Cattaneo received the First Art Therapy Educator Award awarded by the American Art Therapy Association in 2008.
Her private practice focuses on supervision of expressive therapists, art therapists, mental health counselors and consultations.
She continues to be a visual artist and musician.
